5.4-magnitude quake hits Cook Strait, New Zealand -- GFZ

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted Cook Strait, New Zealand, at 1929 GMT on Thursday, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 40.05 degrees south latitude and 174.88 degrees east longitude.
